The content of the Primer was not static and many different editions were published of the eighteenth century, it was more religious than at any time during its history. The earliest surviving edition of the New England Primer is from 1727. The copy held the NYPL includes the Westminster Catechism while the AAS The New England Primer was the first reading primer designed for the American Colonies. It became the most successful educational textbook published in 17th 1690, Boston publishers were reprinting the English Protestant Tutor under the editions are known only from publishers' and booksellers' advertisements.
